Individual Distinction Senior Level + Group High Distinction Senior Level

International Linguistics Olympiad in China

Requirement: International Linguistics Olympiad in China consists of an Individual Round and a Group Round. Individual participants who rank among the top 30 percentile are graded as “Distinction”, while groups that rank among the top 5 percentile are graded as “High Distinction”.

What I did: I first enrolled in the IOLC Campus Ambassador training camp to acquire fundamental knowledge related to linguistics. Later, I started the I18N OS Club to attract students sharing the same interest as mine and learn more advanced knowledge and skills related to Linguistics Olympiad. I was graded as the Individual Distinction Senior Level in the provincial contest and shortlisted for the national competition. In the individual round of the national competition, I completely solved 2 puzzles and 1 partially. Then in the group round, my randomly allocated partner and I almost solved the puzzle.

1st place for Senior Individual Website

National History Day China

Requirement: The senior participants who engage in the website category of National History Day China should first build their websites related to the annual theme and meet each requirement listed in the rulebook. After the website lock-out date, the judges will evaluate each entry according to a series of guidelines including historical argument, research width, historical accuracy, student voice, etc. Participants’ scores given by the judges are first weighted, and then the average of the weighted scores will be their final scores. Finally, participants who rank among the top 3 places would be awarded and announced.

What I did: I partook in lectures on world history since the 16th century and historical argumentative writing skills. Then I settled on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as my research topic and enroll in the website category of the NHD. I studied numerous academic articles and primary materials from the internet and built my website, and then optimized the website via custom code and multi-media resources in accordance with the judges’ evaluation reports.

Honorable Mention Award + Regional Second Award + Appealing CTBee of the Year

China Thinks Big

Requirement: China Thinks Big is divided into 3 stages: Online Trials, National Online Showcase, and Global Finals. All participants have to enroll in groups and compete in academic quality, creativity, feasibility, developability, desirability, social influence, and presentation and defense. Groups that rank among the regional top 15 percentile win the Regional Second Award. Groups that are shortlisted for the National Online Showcase and rank among the top 45 percentile in their field win the Honorable Mention Award.

What I did: Before we worked on the mobile application for neighborhood aid, our team first interviewed officers in nearby communities and an executive in a famous real estate company and distributed questionnaires to survey and study current problems with contemporary urban communities. We then held several meetings to decide on the media our product should use and the mobile application was our final decision. During the development, we held several public antifraud lectures, particularly for the elders. Our performance was graded according to our research and operation plans and reports, social influence, and online showcase.

AP Scholar with Distinction Award + AP Scholar with Honor Award

College Board

Requirement: AP Scholar with Distinction Award is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. AP Scholar with Honor Award is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.

What I did: I learned AP Calculus BC, AP Macroeconomics, AP Microeconomics, and AP Computer Science in the 10th grade, and got 5’s in all these subjects in the AP exams in 2021. In 2022, I learned AP World History and AP Statistics, and I scored 5 in AP Statistics. I didn’t take the AP World History exam due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong.

Provincial Third Award

National Olympiad in Informatics

Requirement: Students who engage in NOIP should first be qualified in the CSP (Certified Software Professional). In NOIP, every student is required to present their original solutions as programs to 4 confusing puzzles, which highly differ in logical reasoning and major algorithm. Each puzzle values 100 points, and students who score at least 100 points win the Third Award.

What I did: I have learned and practiced OI-related programming knowledge and skills since the 7th grade. I was selected to take part in the NOI training camp in 10th grade and looked into advanced problem-solving logistics and methods. I independently solved 1 challenge and 2 partially in NOI which earned me the Provincial Third Award.

National Silver Award

International Robot Olympiad China

Requirement: Students who engage in IRO China should complete 4 challenges consisting of 1 line-patrolling challenge and 3 I/O (input and output) challenges with their partners. Groups that rank among the top 7 win National Silver Award.

What I did: I built a team with my partner when we were in the robotics club in the 7th grade. We learned about components of robots and C language throughout the following 3 years and partook in various robotics competitions to accumulate in-contest experiences. In IRO China, I solved 2 I/O challenges and contributed to the solution of 1 challenge, while my partner almost got the highest possible score in the line-patrolling challenge.
